Choosing a Trainer

There are many different ways an individual can become a dog trainer, various certifications and training courses exist to help facilitate this and just because a trainer has a website, does not guarantee they are certified or experienced. As an owner it is important for you to not only research a potential trainer but also to fully communicate your expectations. Are you looking for obedience training or behavior modification? Most trainers offer obedience training which includes basic commands, potty training, leash walking, and will often address issues like jumping up on people, barking, and chewing. Obedience training is a necessary foundation for every dog but some issues, like anxiety, fear, reactivity, and aggression, require behavior modification as well . Not all dog trainers engage in behavior modification so when doing research on a trainer it is important to seek out reviews or success stories where the specific issue you want to address has been treated. Finally, the only way any training program can be successful long term is for you to engage in the process and learn how to maintain it. At all times you are either training or de-training your dog and a good trainer will teach you how to reinforce positive behaviors and correct or deter negative ones.
