Eleanor, 19-161's Bio

Eleanor, a seven year old, 80 lb. shepherd mix, came to us from Wynne Friends of Animals. She had lived her entire life in the backyard of a woman who also had another smaller dog and a cat. Tragically, the woman and the other pets were killed in a house fire in early October. First responders found Ellie the next day hiding in the yard and turned her over to animal control. According to workers there, she was terrified when she entered the facility and got worse every day she was there.

A CARE staff member noticed Ellie while in Wynne to see two different dogs. We tried to pull her that day, but she was too stressed to handle the move. Finally, after several visits, we were able to gain enough of her trust to get her into the CAREvan. Our only goal at that point was to get her back some degree of emotional stability. It was not at all clear if she would ever be adoptable.

Ellie bonded very quickly to her temporary foster mom; so bonded, in fact, that she couldn’t be left alone. She would lick herself bloody from the stress. We consulted with a behaviorist who suggested Ellie get more alone time outside. It was, after all, what she was used to. IT WORKED!!! Ellie is now with a regular foster and doing phenomenally well. No signs of anxiety whatsoever. She can be left alone, either outside or inside, with no problem. She is perfectly housebroken and doesn't even care much for getting up on furniture. She's almost the perfect pup!

Unfortunately, Ellie will likely never be able to be trusted alone with other animals. She does great on walks, but not with close dog/dog interaction. She will be perfectly fine one second then suddenly not fine at all. She’s just too unpredictable in that regard to be considered safe.

All that said she is one of the sweetest, most loving dogs ever! Even though she’s a little older, she is adorably playful. Her capacity for joy seems almost endless. She just needs a fenced back yard and people (with no other pets) who will love her as much as she loves them. She is one of those “once in a lifetime” dogs who will steal your heart and never let it go. Please just give her the chance.

Eleanor is spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. She is also heartworm positive, and we are waiting for a follow-up vet visit to determine her course of treatment. Regardless, CARE will be responsible for all related expenses. Her adoption fee is $200.
